Position paper on strengthening the role of the European Union in a global context

17 April 2019

For decades, the economic integration of the European Union (EU) has been successfully driven forward in order to secure and promote prosperity and stability in Europe. At the same time, the EU is increasingly pursuing a common trade policy within the framework of bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements. This multilateral approach to economic relations has always gone hand in hand with a dependence on the US for security and a firm commitment to the Atlantic Alliance. Owing to the different traditions and historical experience in EU member states, there has been little development up to now of a common European external perspective.
